I had the honor of photographing Sister Mary Jo Sobieck of Marian Catholic High School as she threw out the first pitch for the White Sox at their game against the Kansas City Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Sister Mary Jo wore the number 60 to represent the anniversary of Marian Catholic. She was one of the Sisters who founded the school back in 1958.
I was able to capture a moment between her, White Sox Manager Rick Renteria, and third base coach Joe McEwing before she threw out the pitch. Renteria said he saw her practicing and was impressed and asked her if she’d sub for “Timmy” (Tim Anderson).
For the pitch, Sister Mary Jo (or Sister MoJo as some of the students call her), walked around the mound, and then stood on the rubber to deliver the pitch. Just before the throw, she did a little move and bounced the ball off her bicep before throwing a perfect strike to White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito behind home plate.
I’ve never heard the crowd cheer so loudly for a first pitch in all the games I’ve been to!
She sounds amazing!! Love the photos here, absolutely gorgeous and really captures the fun of the moment!
