What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

Couples, Resources

July 12, 2024

Let’s talk outfits—because yes, what to wear for your engagement session matters, but not in the way you might think. Engagement sessions are about capturing your connection in a way that feels true, effortless, and a little elevated. Your outfits should reflect that too.

Whether your vibe is polished and romantic, laid-back and modern, or a mix of textures and bold touches, this guide will help you find looks that feel like you—just with a little extra intention.

1. Start With Your Style, Not a Pinterest Trend

You don’t need to reinvent your wardrobe for your session. If you wouldn’t normally wear something in real life, it probably won’t feel right in photos either. The best place to start is with pieces you already love—then think about how to elevate them. Think favorite dress, but paired with a long coat or statement boots. Or your go-to sweater, styled with tailored pants or a silk skirt. It’s all about thoughtful layers and balance.

2. Think “Complementary,” Not “Matching”

Coordination > matching. Stick with a cohesive color palette or mood (moody neutrals, soft earth tones, jewel tones, etc.). Think textures that vibe well together—like velvet and denim, leather and linen, or knits and silk.

3. Add a Personal Statement Piece

This could be a wide-brim hat, layered necklaces, a vintage blazer, or even a bold lip. If it makes you feel confident and fits the aesthetic of your shoot, go for it. It’s those little details that can bring so much personality into your photos.

4. Don’t Shy Away from Black or Deeper Tones

While lighter colors and neutrals always photograph beautifully, rich, moody tones—like black, deep green, rust, or burgundy—can add a striking contrast that still feels timeless, especially in city or indoor settings. The key is choosing tones that flatter your skin and work with your environment.

5. Choose Pieces With Movement

Fabrics that flow or catch the breeze—like silk, chiffon, or lightweight knits—photograph so beautifully. Long coats, flowy skirts, or oversized button-downs can create natural, dreamy movement as you walk or interact together.

6. One Look Is Plenty—But a Second Is Totally Fine

You absolutely don’t need to bring a second outfit, but if you’re torn between two looks or want a little variety, feel free to bring a second one and keep it in your car. A lot of couples like to switch things up midway—maybe one outfit that’s a little more elevated and one that feels more casual. If it makes sense with our location or timing, we can definitely make it work. But truly, one thoughtfully styled look is more than enough.

7. Be Comfortable, But Elevated

This isn’t the time to wear something that needs constant adjusting or shoes you can’t walk in. If you feel good in what you’re wearing, it’ll show. Confidence always photographs better than perfection. The goal is elevated, not overdone.

8. A Few Combinations That Always Work

Here are some pairings that strike a balance between timeless and styled:

  • Flowy dress + leather jacket

  • Band tee + structured blazer
  • Oversized knit + silk skirt or wide-leg trousers

  • Monochrome neutrals + bold shoe or accessory
  • Denim + structured coat

  • Denim + silk
  • Minimal base outfit + vintage or textured layer

  • Chunky sweater + slacks with boots

These are just starting points—you can make them your own based on what feels like you.

The most important thing? You should feel like yourselves—just with a little extra polish. Your session is about connection and feeling, not perfection. I’ll help guide you throughout the shoot so nothing feels too posed or overthought, and I’m always happy to give input on outfits if you’re deciding between looks.
